ABOUT ZIMBABWE
Country: Republic of Zimbabwe Zimbabwe is a southern country in Africa, landlocked between Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana. The country's total area is 150, 873 square miles, which is slightly larger than the state of Montana. It claims a large part of the great plateau of southern Africa. A number of short rivers flow through the country. Zimbabwe's largest body of water is Lake Kariba, which is formed on the Zambesi River. The Zambesi River is one of the roughest in the world. Many adventurers travel to Zimbabwe for the incredible whitewater rafting. One of the most beautiful scenes in the world is undoubtedly the great Victoria Falls, one of the world's natural wonders. Millions of tourists travel every year to witness the spectacular display as the falls cascade into the Zambesi River. Zimbabwe has a very moderate climate throughout the year, with a very small variance in temperature between the summer and winter months. Another outstanding attraction of Zimbabwe is the wild life found in the nationÕs game parks. Many animal species are protected, and the number of poaching has significantly been reduced over the past few years. The population of Zimbabwe is estimated just over 11 million (1998). Harare, the nation's capital, and Bulawayo are the largest cities, each with a population over one million. There is a risk that this number could reduce drastically, depending on the devastating effects of HIV. There are two main ethnic groups, the Shona (70%) and the Sindebele. English is the official language. The most widely practiced religion in Zimbabwe is Syncretism, a faith combining Christianity with traditional indigenous beliefs. Lifestyles differ drastically between the urbanized and rural people. Social and family life is important to most Zimbabweans, and they are tremendously hospitable. Zimbabweans are quite skilled at craftsmanship, and art (especially woodcarving) is practiced by many.
